KMPDC Internship Placement Process in Kenya: Guidelines & Procedures

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) oversees the internship placement process for medical and dental graduands in Kenya. Here’s an overview of the comprehensive process:

1. Balloting

Local and East African Trained Doctors: Medical and Dental graduands participate in a balloting process to secure internship slots at approved centres across Kenya and the East African Community.

Foreign Trained Doctors: Graduands from foreign medical and dental schools must first sit for an Internship Qualifying Exam. Upon passing, they are eligible to participate in the balloting for available internship slots at approved centres.

2. Oathing

Upon placement, medical and dental graduands undergo an orientation process that includes:

  • Understanding the structure and functions of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Taking the Hippocratic Oath, symbolizing their commitment to ethical medical practice.

3. Placement

The Internship Placement Committee reviews and approves the placement lists submitted by various medical and dental schools.

  • Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK): Interns interested in CHAK-affiliated facilities apply directly to CHAK offices. Successful candidates are interviewed and listed for internship placement, subject to council approval.

  • Defence Forces Memorial Hospital: Interns seeking placement at Defence Forces Memorial Hospital apply through the Ministry of Defence. After vetting, a list of successful candidates is submitted to KMPDC for consideration.

  • Private Hospitals: Interns wishing to intern at private hospitals apply directly to approved facilities. Upon successful interviews, they receive offer letters to present to KMPDC for issuance of an Internship Licence.

4. Posting

Once approved, the placement list is forwarded to the Ministry of Health for processing of Posting Orders. No fees are payable at this stage.

5. Internship License

After receiving the posting order and offer letter, interns must apply for an Internship License from KMPDC. They are required to download a logbook from the KMPDC website. A license application fee of Kshs. 5,000 is payable to KMPDC’s KCB Bank Account or Mpesa Paybill Number upon submission of the application form.
